16th September 2019 : Post-doc position – material science and climate change policy – Georgetown U.

Dear colleagues,

I would like to invite applications for a post-doc opening in my group
(Physics) in collaboration with Joanna Lewis (School of Foreign Service)
at Georgetown University in Washington DC, to work on an innovative,
cross-disciplinary project combining materials science and climate
change policy.

The project examines how scientific insight from green formulations of
cement and concrete can be used to inform current policy discussions on
carbon mitigation.

The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to analyze how the cohesion and
durability of cement may change due to varying climate conditions and
in greener formulations, determine the consequences of such changes for
the practical use and the performance of the materials in the
built infrastructure, and work with relevant stakeholders and partners
to identify new policy tools and strategies that could effectively
change the way cement and concrete are used at the scale of cities.

The fellow will also have the opportunity to engage on related research
projects led by the supervising faculty, and to pursue independent
research leveraging Georgetown’s resources and expertise.

The position is based in both the Science, Technology and International
Affairs Program at the School of Foreign Service and the Department of
Physics in Georgetown College. Desired start date is either January or
August 2020. Review of applications will begin on September 30, 2019 and
will continue until the position is filled.

Ideal candidates will have a Ph.D. a Ph.D. in engineering, physics,
materials science or related discipline plus a strong interest in, or
training and work experience related to, climate and energy policy.

Candidates with a degree that combines engineering, physics, materials
science or related discipline with policy training, such as engineering
and public policy, energy and resources, engineering management, or
related fields are also welcome to apply. Experience working in China,
India or other emerging economies a plus.
