We study the preponderance of particular types of Boolean functions in gene regulatory networks. We first compile a reference dataset of 2687 functions extracted from published models. This dataset shows strong enrichments in « read-once » functions and in nested canalyzing functions. These enrichments can be justified by selection for minimum complexity, either Boolean complexity based on string lengths in formal logic which is yet unexplored in the biological context, or average sensitivity which corresponds to maximizing robustness to noise.
